The First Presbyterian Church Apartments is located at 179-185 Market Street in Lexington, Kentucky. Both buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and underwent a major renovation to preserve the existing 10 affordable residential apartment units in 2009.

Located in the Northside Residential Historic District, the First Presbyterian Church Apartments encompass two historic buildings built in the mid 1800s. The Colonial is the oldest original apartment building in Downtown Lexington at 179 Market Street. 185 Market Street was originally part of the neighboring house and was used as a former servant’s quarters. The Northside District consists almost entirely of juxtaposed blocks of varying and often contrasting socio-economic, architectural, and urbanite character. Arranged in a recognizable pattern reflecting the continuing evolution of a primarily 19th-century residential area, these diverse ingredients comprise a remarkable integrated whole, making it a viable place to live.

The Colonial stands as the gateway to the earliest Lexington suburbs and a transition point to the downtown Lexington area. Within a block or two, residents can walk to Historic Gratz Park, art galleries and several popular restaurants.

The original apartment units have been carefully and expertly renovated to include all modern systems and amenities. The apartments feature hardwood floors, large windows, spacious closets, individually controlled thermostats, and fully equipped kitchens.

There are 10 gracious apartments in total with 1 studio, 2 one-bedroom units and 7 two-bedroom units. All homes located in the Colonial building are fully accessible with a new elevator that serves all levels. A Community Library located in one of the buildings serves all residents.

The First Presbyterian Church Apartments offer convenient, comfortable, and affordable living at various rent levels through financing from the Kentucky Housing Corporation as well as Central Bank, and City of Lexington HOME program. Income restrictions will apply for all apartments.

The historic Oliver School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was once included in the Top 10 Most Endangered Historic Structures in the state of Kentucky. It is now preserved and transformed into 11 affordable residential apartment units for families.

Once serving as the only place in the community where African-Americans received education at the secondary level, The Oliver School site provided educational opportunities from 1892-1956. The Oliver Street School building stood, at its construction, as a remarkably well-constructed edifice. As a result, it remains as the most prominent feature of the local landscape within this important historical theme. The Oliver Street School is the only surviving historic African-American community high school structure in Clark County, Kentucky, which makes its transformation and continued use even more significant.

The original classrooms have been carefully and expertly transformed into comfortable apartments which include all modern systems and amenities. The apartments feature high ceilings, large windows, spacious closets, individually controlled thermostats, and fully equipped kitchens.

There are 11 gracious apartments in total with 3 one-bedroom units, 5 two-bedroom units and 3 three-bedroom units. All homes are fully accessible with a new elevator that serves all levels. The Community Center and furnished Community Room serves all residents.

Originally constructed in 1926, the Beattyville Grade School enjoyed a rich history prior to its new life as an apartment community for seniors. The Beattyville School was originally built for grades 1-12, and it continued to serve grades 1-5 until 1969 when it was converted to function as both the Administrative Board Building and Maintenance Plant. The Beattyville Grade School also housed the first public educational radio station in the United States which was established to serve a rural population. The call letters WBKY operated out of the station near the Beattyville School Stage from 1940-1941, when the lack of reception made it impossible to continue operations. The station moved to Lexington and kept the WBKY call letters until 1989 when it switched to the call letter WUKY. The school was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The original classrooms have been carefully and expertly transformed into comfortable apartments which include all modern systems and amenities. The apartments feature high ceilings, large new windows, spacious closets, individually controlled thermostats, and fully equipped kitchens. Many apartments enjoy the lasting craftsmanship of unusual quarter sawn wood floors, attesting to the precision of a bygone era.

There are 18 gracious apartments in total with 12 one-bedroom units and 6 two-bedroom units. Most apartments are fully accessible with a new elevator that serves all floors. The original radio station room has been preserved and the furnished Community Room will serve all residents.

The Beattyville School Apartments offer convenient, comfortable, and affordable living through financing from the Kentucky Housing Corporation as well as the Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises, Inc. Income and age restrictions will apply for all apartments.

The main building of Buffalo Elementary School in Buffalo, Kentucky is a one-story, steel frame schoolhouse originally constructed in 1936 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. The school held its last classes in 2007, 70 years after its first classes, and is now 19 affordable residential apartments for seniors. Construction was complete and a Ribbon Cutting Dedication was held in February 2011.

From its opening in 1936 until its closing over 70 years later, Buffalo School educated multiple generations of local families in its classrooms. This school and its predecessors demonstrate the community’s long-held high estimation of education. Founded in 1848, Buffalo quickly became known as a “School Town”. Buffalo School rests on the site of the former East Lynn College (established 1874) and Buffalo Grade School (1890s) and High School (circa 1908), all of which exemplified the town’s commitment to education as an integral part of the area’s development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and strengthened the association between the site and local education. The few business places, churches, and schools that have populated Buffalo take on a greater status than simply the function that the place performs. This school and the others that have served Buffalo over the years touched nearly all of the lives of the living community of people and Buffalo School continued in this tradition of academic valuation and civic pride.

The original classrooms have been carefully and expertly transformed into comfortable apartments which include all modern systems and amenities. The apartments feature high ceilings, abundant light, spacious closets, individually controlled thermostats, and fully equipped kitchens. There are 19 gracious apartments in total with 11 one-bedroom units and 8 two-bedroom units. A furnished Community Room and outdoor courtyard serves all residents.

The Buffalo School Apartments offer convenient, comfortable, and affordable living through financing from the Kentucky Housing Corporation as well as First Federal Savings Bank of Elizabethtown and Branch Banking and Trust Company. Income and age restrictions apply for all apartments.

Clendenin School (also known as the Big Sandy District High School) was built in 1912 and is located within the Clendenin Historic District in Clendenin, West Virginia. The Clendenin School is now transformed into two main uses including a non-profit community health center, and 18 units of quality, affordable and convenient housing for seniors.

Clendenin School (also known as the Big Sandy District High School) was designed by architect A.G. Higginbotham in 1912. The building served as the seat of education in Clendenin until 2003 and serves as an important part of the historic district commemorating the small town’s history; it has long been considered a community icon and has educated countless Kanawha County citizens. This building has remained a very prominent feature in its landscape for nearly 100 years, and is one of the small town’s largest remaining buildings.

Riverview at Clendenin School is the fusion of two complex federal programs in order to bring life back to Clendenin, WV. AU Associates, Inc. led an innovative group of housing and economic development professionals to achieve the adaptive reuse of the historic former Clendenin Middle School building into a mixed-use facility that will provide much needed health care to the region and safe, quality, affordable housing for independent seniors in the area to age gracefully.

While the project is complex, the goals are not. By combining Federal Stimulus money and USDA funds aimed at improving the quality of Community Health Clinics and by using NSP funds which are aimed at revitalizing areas hard hit by vacancy, delinquency and foreclosure, Riverview at Clendenin School is maximizing the leverage of the community and its funding dollars. The two projects are physically intertwined but financially separate. Each only depends on the other to be built in order to fulfill its objectives as one half of the building cannot be revitalized without the other half.

The original classrooms have been carefully and expertly transformed into comfortable apartments and 13,000 square feet of medical office space, both of which include all modern systems and amenities. The apartments feature high ceilings, abundant light, spacious closets, individually controlled thermostats, and fully equipped kitchens. There are 18 gracious apartments in total with 12 one-bedroom units and 6 two-bedroom units.

Clendenin School Apartments offers convenient, comfortable, and affordable living through financing from the Department of Housing and Urban Development via the West Virginia Development Office and the Neighborhood Stabilization Program as well as through Poca Valley Bank and State and Federal Historic Tax Credits. Income and age restrictions apply for all apartments.
